Congratulations to the Sachem North Varsity Arrowettes who earned their 14th NDA National Title in the Small Varsity Kick Division at NDA Nationals in Orlando, Florida. This is the first National Championship Kick title the Sachem North Arrowettes have ever won! Sachem North Varsity Arrowettes have won at least one kick title in Jazz, Pom, Kick, Hip Hop and Team Performance at NDA Nationals since 2012.
Sachem North Varsity Arrowettes also received the prestigious honor of NDA Grand Champions for the entire NDA Nationals 2020 weekend. Also, a first-time achievement for the program! The Grand National Champion Banner is presented to the team having the highest total of two (2) category scores during finals. The Sachem North Varsity Arrowettes had a score of 95.43 in Small Varsity Kick Division and a 94.9 in the Small Varsity Pom Division.
Overall, the Sachem North Varsity Arrowettes placed top 4 in all five of our routines!
1st Place in Small Varsity Kick with a Special Award for Innovative Choreography
2nd Place in Small Varsity Team Performance with a Special Award for Superior Showmanship
3rd Place in Small Varsity Jazz with a Special Award for Technical Excellence
3rd place in Small Varsity Pom
4th Place in Small Varsity Hip Hop
The Sachem North Varsity Arrowettes have been inspired by our late Sachem North Volleyball Coach Matt DiStefano, who recently passed away from cancer in January. Matt DiStefano ‘s “We Get To” legacy has inspired the team to never give up no matter how tough it gets. The Sachem North Varsity Arrowettes team and coaches truly used Matt DiStefano legacy as motivation and inspiration to dance their very best this weekend at NDA Nationals.
Head coach Katie Prusinski and Assistant Coach David Maczkiewicz could not be prouder of how their team danced this weekend! “They fought until the very end! “We Get To” be NDA National Kick Champions and NDA National Grand Champions!!”

Sachem East Wrestling Wins League I and Section XI Dual Meet Titles
An improbable run as the fifth seed in the tournament resulted in a team championship for Sachem East wrestling.
The Arrows stormed past No. 1 Eastport-South Manor in the semifinals and defeated No. 2 Rocky Point, a three-time defending champion, in the finals to capture a Section XI dual meet championship on Saturday, Jan. 19 at Bay Shore High School, a neutral venue.
In dramatic fashion, it came down to the final match at the hands of Sachem’s Luis Valdez, who pinned his opponent and pushed the Arrows ahead with a 42-37 victory.
It’s worth noting that two weeks prior the Arrows also won a League I dual meet championship after knocking off Central Islip on the road.
Next up: Sachem will wrestle in the League I tournament on Feb. 2 at Ward Melville.

Sachem’s Margaret Atwood Wins Racewalk State Championship
Another track season gone by, and another dominant racewalking performance for Sachem.
Sachem East’s Margaret Atwood captured a New York State championship in the 1,500-meter racewalk. She won with a time of six minutes, 49 seconds.
“At this meet, a lot of people have a lot of energy,” she told Newsday after the race. “So, when I first went out, a couple girls went out really hard. But, I didn’t have it to scare me, so I just stayed close and maintained my pace throughout the race.”
Atwood follows in the footsteps of Sachem racewalk greats Lauren Harris, who holds a number of national indoor and outdoor records and currently competes at Marist College, and Maria Michta-Coffey, a two-time Olympian and Sachem Hall of Famer, who has been a mentor and coach for Atwood, as Michta-Coffey still supports the program to this day.
Sachem East’s Chelsea Benedict placed sixth in the racewalk with a time of seven minutes, 19 seconds.
In the 600-meter race, Sachem East’s Jess Nischo finished at No. 16 with a time of one minute, 38 seconds.
Sachem North had a strong showing in the 1,500-meter run as Jordyn McDonnell (4:45.06) and Molly Ramirez (4:45.97) placed ninth and 10th, respectively. Longtime track and field Sachem coach Alex Young said he could not recall a time in the last 30 years when two Sachem runners finished in the top 10 in a state championship 1,500-meter run like this.
Sachem East’s 4x800 relay of Shayna Arrigo, Bridget Abraldes, Kaitlyn Famigletti and Rachel Ruggiero finished fifth in the state with a time of nine minutes and 17 seconds.
Abraldes, Arrigo, Famigletti and Angela Consalazio also ran the 4x400 relay and finished at No. 8 with a time of four minutes and six seconds.
Sachem North’s Molly Kearns threw 34-11.00 in the shot put, which was good enough for No. 17 in the state.
On the boys’ side, the single competitor at states was Sachem East’s Justin Allone, who finished at No. 16 in the 3,200-meter run in a time of nine minutes, 33 seconds.

NYSPHSAA Announces 2016-2017 Scholar-Athlete School of Distinction and Excellence Winners
Sachem East and Sachem North each earned a “School of Excellence” award
from NYSPHSSA by having 75% of our varsity teams qualify for and receive
the Scholar-Athlete team award. The purpose of the “School of
Excellence” award is to unite varsity coaches in challenging their teams
to achieve a statewide honor. NYSPHSAA’s Scholar-Athlete team award
was initiated in the 1991-1992 school year. The School of Distinction
award, established in 2002-03 and the School of Excellence award,
established this year, are sponsored by Pupil Benefits Plan. The list of
schools are those that earned the award from Suffolk County/Section
XI.

Sachem North Gymnasium dedicated Thomas J. Sabatelle Alumni Gymnasium
In one of the highest athletic honors possible, the gymnasium at Sachem High School North was renamed in honor of former Sachem Athletic Director and alum Tom Sabatelle Tuesday evening. The gym is now known as the “Thomas J. Sabatelle Alumni Gymnasium”.
Sabatelle, who graduated from Sachem in 1960, and was one of the first alums hired by the district to teach and coach, spent most of his career as athletic director, making a positive impact on the students, staff and reputation of the Sachem Central School District.
