Science Research students from Sachem High School North and Sachem High School East showcased their hard work and innovation at the 2025 Long Island Science Congress, held on April 8 at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City. The annual competition brings together approximately 900 students from 80 schools across Nassau and Suffolk counties, making it one of the region’s most competitive science fairs.

Sachem’s students presented original research projects spanning a wide range of disciplines, including medicine and health, ecology, sociology, mycology, and materials science. Each student participated in three rounds of judging, where they explained the purpose of their research, outlined their methodology, presented their data and analysis, and discussed their conclusions and plans for continued investigation.

The event provided a valuable platform for students to engage with professionals in the field, gain feedback and practice communicating complex scientific ideas. Their participation reflects the strength and depth of Sachem’s Science Research Program and its commitment to fostering the next generation of scientists and innovators.

Sachem High School North Raises $5,000 for St. Baldrick’s Foundation, Bringing Six-Year Total to Over $50,000

St. Baldrick’s Event in Gymnasium thumbnail265503

Sachem High School North recently hosted its annual St. Baldrick’s event, raising approximately $5,000 for childhood cancer research. With this year’s contribution, the event’s total fundraising over the past six years has now exceeded $50,000, a remarkable achievement that reflects the dedication and spirit of the school community.

This year’s event was marked by high energy, with the senior class taking home the coveted title of the most spirited. Their enthusiasm helped fuel a day filled with fun and meaningful activities, including silly competitions and interactive audience participation, designed to bring students together for a great cause.

The inspiration for the event came from cancer survivor Dominick Strebel, who was a student at Sachem North back in 2018 and is now a student teacher in social studies.

The Interact Club, which organizes the event, spends months planning every detail to ensure the day is both fun and impactful. This year, students participated in shaving and shenanigans, a series of lighthearted competitions that help raise awareness while creating lasting memories. The event also saw a wonderful performance by the school’s orchestra ensemble, who played an Irish song to celebrate the occasion.

One of the event’s highlights was Principal Mr. Nolan’s decision to shave his head in support of the cause. Additionally, the school’s talented cosmetology students and teachers were on hand to manage the head shaving, a service they’ve provided each year with dedication.

Though there wasn’t a specific guest of honor battling cancer this year, the event honored all children fighting the disease, continuing its tradition of raising awareness and showing solidarity with those in need.

St. Baldrick’s at Sachem High School North is more than just a fundraiser – it’s a chance for students to come together, laugh and make a difference. The Interact Club looks forward to continuing this tradition of community, fun and support for childhood cancer research.

Students from Sachem North’s Advanced Crafts class, AP Art classes and National Art Honor Society recently embarked on an inspiring field trip to collaborate with the local organization UpSculpt. Known for its innovative upcycled sculptures crafted from marine debris found on Long Island, UpSculpt provided an enriching experience for the students, fostering creativity and environmental awareness.

Under the guidance of artist and founder Cindy Pease Roe and Director of Education Bri Sander, the students were introduced to advanced crafting techniques and creative processes used by practicing artists. The immersive workshop allowed them to explore exquisite materials and utilize professional tools, inspiring them to create their own UpSculpt-inspired artworks.

The day was not just about crafting, but about using their passion for the ocean and the environment to repurpose trash into beautiful art. Students had a fantastic time, combining their artistic talents with a sense of environmental responsibility to create truly unique pieces.

This unforgettable experience highlighted the power of art to inspire change, encouraging students to think creatively while making a positive impact on the world around them.
