Sachem Students Are in the Spirit of Giving

Sachem Students Are in the Spirit of Giving thumbnail262788
Sachem high school students individually packed hundreds of boxes of food to help feed local families this Thanksgiving. The student governments at both East and North held food drives leading up to the holiday, collecting items to create a full Thanksgiving meal. Each high school packed more than 400 boxes of food, totaling more than 800 holiday meals to be distributed. The donations went to Sachem families in need, and any leftover boxes were donated to the food pantry at Suffolk Independent Living Organization in Medford, Lighthouse Mission and the Town of Brookhaven to help feed those in the surrounding community.

Sachem is proud to announce two of our talented high school musicians will be marching with the Macy’s Great American Marching Band in the 98th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade! High School East senior Jaden Rudnicki will be playing mellophone for his third consecutive year as a member of the MGAMB. High School North junior Amanda Morda is making her debut playing trumpet with the MGAMB.

The Macy’s Great American Marching Band honors America’s finest high school musicians, color guard members, and dancers, and has nationwide representation amongst its 225 members. Representation from each state is extremely limited, so to have two students chosen from Sachem is truly a special honor.

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is internationally recognized as the start of the holiday season and is cheered on by 3.5 million spectators lining the route. Tune in this Thursday, Nov. 28, starting at 8:30 a.m. on NBC or Peacock to catch the parade and support Jaden and Amanda!

Revamped Food Pantry Benefits Community

The Interact Club at Sachem High School North is lending a helping hand to the larger community. Students recently revamped the building’s food pantry, moving to a larger location to provide more resources to local families. They first went through the food at the old location, getting rid of any expired items. Students then transferred the remaining items to the new location in the building, a larger office not in use. They sorted through the nonperishables, assigning them to specific shelving spots. Through different food drives, the Interact Club was able to completely restock the new and improved pantry.

The Sachem Central Teachers’ Association also plays a big role in the food pantry project. SCTA teachers in each building throughout the district are assigned an item for collection. They then send their donations to High School North and have been making an amazing impact on the pantry’s growth. Teachers have been able to help sustain a continuous source for the pantry, going by the motto, “Many hands make light work.”

Sachem’s Model United Nations team held a successful mock conference focused on the right to clean water on Saturday, Nov. 16. The event, which was held at High School East, brought together students from both High School East and High School North for meaningful discussions and diplomatic negotiations on one of the world’s most pressing issues.

Participants represented various nations and debated strategies to address water scarcity, pollution and inequality in water distribution. Students also worked together to draft resolutions aimed at securing clean water for communities around the world, particularly in regions facing the worst water crises.

Mrs. Gearns, Sachem’s Model UN advisor, is very proud of the students who participated in the event and the active role the club’s leadership took in organizing the day, especially Tricia Block, Madyn Gassner, Ryan Medina, John O’Brien and Aarav Sehgal. Additionally, she congratulates Logan Ryan Schomaker for being named best overall delegate.

Sachem’s Model UN is dedicated to fostering leadership, diplomacy and global awareness through simulations of the United Nations. The club encourages critical thinking, problem-solving and teamwork as students work together to address global challenges and seek innovative solutions.
