Project Happiness, the Renaissance Club and Volunteer Club at Sachem HS East is supporting the Sandy Hook Promise by “starting with hello.” Throughout the week of Oct. 23, Sachem East held a spirit week to encourage students to make new social connections and create a sense of belonging. It aligned with the Sandy Hook Promise’s Start with Hello initiative, which challenges students to strike up conversation with others who may be lonely or feeling socially isolated.

The spirit week kicked off with “Meet and Greet” Monday. Students were asked to say hello to someone new during each passing period throughout the day. On Tuesday, students wore neon to “stand out against bullying.” Wednesday marked “Color Day” where students were asked to wear either green, the color of the Sandy Hook Promise, or orange, the symbol of gun violence prevention. Thursday was “Random Acts of Kindness Day” and the week closed out with “Be a Team Player Day” on Friday, where students wore Sachem apparel to show that everyone is on the same team at HS East.
