Hiawatha Elementary School

Principal's Message

September 9, 2020

Dear Hiawatha Elementary School Community,

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year at Hiawatha Elementary School, home of the Huskies! It is with great honor and pride, that I introduce myself as the new Principal of Hiawatha Elementary School. The Hiawatha family has already given me quite a warm welcome and I am confident that, collectively, we will ensure Success for All Students!

Throughout my last 17 years in education, I have been fortunate enough to work alongside many exceptional educators, all who share the same belief that Every Child Can Learn, and Will Learn! I know that the Sachem school community shares this same core belief and it is the driving force for me coming to join the Sachem family!

Prior to arriving at Sachem, I was an assistant principal at a Suffolk County middle school. During that time, I was an integral part of a dynamic team, that helped create a culture of rebuilding staff morale, focusing on best practices in data driven instruction, all while maintaining the social-emotional needs of both our students and staff.

In addition, I was a classroom teacher in a junior/senior high school building, in western Nassau County. Throughout my tenure there, I was fortunate enough to be a part of a terrific team of educators who achieved school wide distinctions such as “A Nationally Recognized School of Excellence,” a member of the “AP College Board Honor Roll,” as well as a recipient of the “Schott Award for Excellence.”

Formally, I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in History with a minor in secondary education and a Master of Science degree in Secondary Education with a minor in History, both from Molloy College in Rockville Centre, N.Y. In addition, I have a Master of Science degree in School Administration and School Leadership from Touro College in New York, N.Y.

On a personal level, I am a firm believer in family first! In the summer months, I can be found enjoying all that the Great South Bay offers, with my wife and three children, or on the lacrosse fields coaching our three children on various teams.

I openly welcome my office, to each one of you, to form a collaborative, team effort, in educating our elementary school students. As all of you are aware, elementary school is the most critical time in a child’s life and it is imperative that we, as adults and role models, come together to create Success for All Students!

Thank you for your continued efforts in supporting the Hiawatha Elementary School Community!

Best Regards,
Joe Watson
