WSHR Launches Specialty Programming with “Sachem Votes” Election Special
Sachem’s educational radio station, 91.9-FM WSHR, kicked off its new lineup of specialty programming over the last week with a civic-minded Election Day broadcast series titled “Sachem Votes.” The live special brought together student journalists, educators, and prominent alumni for an engaging discussion on government, public service, and the power of informed citizenship.
The special featured an impressive lineup of studio guests, including former Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy, New York State Assemblymen Doug Smith and Steve Stern, Suffolk County Legislator Anthony Piccirillo, and Tom Cestaro, Chairperson of Social Studies at Sachem North High School.
They each explored topics such as the policy process, civic participation, and Sachem’s enduring role as an educational hub for the next generation of voters and leaders. The Sachem Votes Election Special offered more than two hours of live programming over several days, giving listeners a comprehensive, student-driven look at politics and civic engagement on Long Island.
Leading the broadcast was WSHR Station Manager Alyssa Tappin, alongside on-air talent Lucia Bruccoleri, who guided the discussions with professionalism and poise. The dialogue offered listeners valuable insights into how government operates, what it means to serve the public, and how educators can foster civic awareness in young people.
“Programs like Sachem Votes are exactly what make WSHR so special,” said Tappin. “They show that our students aren’t just learning about journalism and broadcasting, they’re actively engaging with their community, learning from real leaders, and using their platform to inform and inspire.”
In operation for more than 60 years, WSHR continues to stand as a beacon of news, information, and community storytelling for Sachem and the greater Long Island region. The station’s motto, “By Students, For the Community,” has never been stronger. From live student programming to civic broadcasts like Sachem Votes, WSHR is once again proving why it’s Long Island’s strongest educational radio frequency.
