Sachem East AP U.S. History Students Explore Nation’s Past in New York City

Posted Date: 11/08/25 (4:13 PM)

NYC TripMs. Bongiorno and Mrs. Melandro’s AP U.S. History classes embarked on an enriching field trip to New York City, designed to deepen their understanding of American history by visiting sites that have shaped the nation’s story.

The students’ first stop was the 9/11 Memorial and Museum — a powerful and emotional experience dedicated to honoring the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks. This year’s trip was significant, as Sachem East science teacher Mr. Crisci joined as a chaperone and shared his personal experiences of that day, including the loss of his father, FDNY Lieutenant John A. Crisci. His reflections offered students a profound connection to the tragedy and reinforced the message to “never forget.”

The morning itinerary also included visits to Trinity Church and the gravesite of Alexander Hamilton, providing unique insights into early American history and the founding of the nation.

Following a morning of reflection and exploration, students enjoyed lunch at Fraunces Tavern, one of New York’s oldest landmarks and a key gathering place for revolutionaries during the 18th century. It was in this very building that George Washington bid farewell to his officers, making it a fitting site for young historians to dine and learn.

The trip concluded with a walking tour of Wall Street, where students explored the evolution of America’s financial and political systems.

By combining classroom study with experiential learning, this trip brought history to life for students. As they continue their journey through AP U.S. History, these experiences will serve as powerful reminders of how the past continues to shape the present.
