Sachem East and Sachem North Peer Education Students Unite for You Matter University Event

Peer education students from Sachem East and Sachem North came together this week for a cross-district event centered on connection, collaboration, and honest conversation — all through the lens of You Matter University, a program that empowers teens to support one another and learn about themselves.
Hosted at Sachem East, the event gave students from both schools the opportunity to share personal stories, collaborate, and engage in open, peer-led discussions about the challenges and realities of growing up today. Topics included mental health, social pressures, relationships, self-identity, and navigating adolescence in an increasingly complex world.
The program was organized by Jonathan Chiaramonte and Damon Gallo, who utilized the You Matter University framework to create a safe, inclusive environment where students felt comfortable speaking honestly and listening respectfully.
Rather than relying on a lecture-based format, the event emphasized conversation and peer connection. Students worked in groups composed of participants from both Sachem East and Sachem North, fostering new relationships and shared perspectives. The peer education model allowed students to lead discussions, ask meaningful questions, and support one another through authentic dialogue.
Students described the experience as powerful and validating, noting how similar their experiences were despite attending different schools. Many shared that hearing from peers helped them feel more confident, understood, and supported.
The collaboration between Sachem East and Sachem North reflects the district’s ongoing commitment to student wellness, leadership development, and social-emotional learning. Organizers hope the success of the You Matter University event will lead to additional cross-district opportunities that continue to amplify student voice and peer support.
