AP Human Geography Students Conduct Field Study at Smith Haven Mall

Posted Date: 03/03/26 (05:00 PM)

Sachem East students in Mr. Jannace’s AP Human Geography classes stepped outside the classroom and into the real world for an immersive field study at the Smith Haven Mall.

The trip focused on analyzing the mall’s cultural landscape, giving students the opportunity to apply key geographic concepts in a hands-on setting. Jillian Friello, Director of Marketing and Business Development at Smith Haven Mall and a former student of Mr. Jannace, guided students through the geographic inquiry process, helping them refine their understanding of region, place, culture and economic geography.

Throughout the visit, students conducted structured observations designed to strengthen their critical thinking skills. They analyzed why businesses are located where they are and examined patterns of dispersion and density among stores, services and visitors. By studying the spatial organization of the mall, students gained a deeper understanding of how cultural and economic forces shape a region.

Serving as both alumni representative and tour guide, Friello encouraged students to look beyond the surface and evaluate how design, layout and consumer behavior contribute to the overall cultural landscape.

The purpose of the field study was to strengthen students’ mastery of core geographic concepts ahead of the AP Exam in May. In addition, Mrs. Melandro reinforces these themes, along with analytical writing skills, in the Humanities Research co-requisite course, helping students translate their observations into strong academic work.

Beyond the academic benefits, students enjoyed experiencing a familiar community destination in an entirely new way, proving that geography is not just something studied in textbooks, but something lived and observed every day.
