Cold War Comes to Life in Immersive “Arcade” Experience at Sachem East

Students in Justin Cellini’s social studies class at Sachem East recently stepped into a fully immersive learning environment that brings the Cold War era to life.
Dubbed the “Cold War Arcade,” the classroom experience blends traditional instruction with hands-on activities, transforming history into something students can see, touch, and interact with. The initiative features a combination of structured worksheets, critical-thinking assignments, and a creatively designed classroom setup that includes vintage television sets and retro gaming consoles.
Rather than relying solely on lectures or textbooks, the Cold War Arcade encourages students to explore the era's cultural and technological landscape. By engaging with media and tools from the period, students gain a deeper understanding of the geopolitical tensions, societal influences, and everyday life during the Cold War.
The immersive setup is part of a broader effort to create experiential learning opportunities that resonate with today’s students. By incorporating media and technology, the lesson bridges the gap between the past and the present while reinforcing key historical concepts.
Cellini’s approach reflects a growing emphasis on interactive education, where students are active participants in the learning process. The Cold War Arcade not only enhances engagement but also fosters critical thinking, collaboration and a stronger connection to the material.
