Sachem students are gaining a valuable head start on their futures through an innovative partnership that brings real-world career skills directly into the classroom.

This year, the district’s World of Work classes have teamed up with Viability to deliver professional Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS) workshops, providing students with hands-on training and practical experience as they prepare for life beyond school.

The collaboration spans nine Fridays throughout the school year, totaling 18 intensive class periods focused on building essential workplace skills. Rather than a one-time presentation, the sustained partnership allows students to engage deeply with career-readiness concepts and apply them in meaningful ways.

The program is already off to a strong start. Students participated in a session centered on self-advocacy, learning how to communicate their needs and strengths effectively. The following week, the focus shifted to developing self-esteem in the workplace, helping students build confidence as they enter professional environments.

According to Transition Coordinator and Social Worker Mrs. Lacey Donlon-Kraker, the workshops are intentionally aligned with the district’s World of Work curriculum, reinforcing classroom learning with real-world application.

Key areas of focus include workplace readiness, such as resume writing and interview preparation, as well as job exploration and identifying career interests. Students are also developing personal management and communication skills, with an emphasis on confidence and self-advocacy.

By integrating expert-led instruction with classroom teaching, the program is designed to ensure students leave with both the knowledge and practical tools needed to navigate the workforce successfully.

With 18 targeted training sessions, Sachem’s World of Work students are building a strong foundation for their post-secondary journeys and stepping into the future with confidence.
