Wenonah Elementary Honors First Responders in Emotional Community Celebration

Posted Date: 05/14/26 (11:25 AM)

Wenonah PDIn a powerful display of patriotism, gratitude and community pride, Wenonah Elementary School welcomed hundreds of first responders to the school Thursday morning for a heartfelt celebration honoring those who dedicate their lives to serving others.

Wenonah Principal Matthew Perlongo addressed the crowd with a message focused on the values behind the uniforms.

“Your children see the uniforms, but what we really want them to understand are the characteristics of the person wearing them: service, sacrifice, teamwork and kindness,” he said. “Our goal here at Wenonah is to teach those characteristics, and what better way than to show our kids real-life examples. As first responders, you model those values each and every day.”

Students proudly walked in a parade alongside their first responder family members as classmates and staff members cheered in appreciation. The event brought together families, local agencies and the entire school community for a morning centered on service, sacrifice and unity.

Tony Dorio, an NYPD officer and father of Giovanna Dorio, was selected as this year's Grand Marshall. Wenonah fifth-grade teacher Jamie D'Andrea stood with Giovanna and read the touching words Giovanna had written about her dad.

The ceremony featured student speakers at the lectern, touching musical performances and a moving rendition of “Count on Me” by Bruno Mars performed by the entire student body as a tribute to first responders.

The school also took time to recognize Mr. Neil, Wenonah’s security guard and a former NYPD officer, for his continued service and dedication to the Lake Grove school community. Students and staff applauded his commitment to keeping the school safe while serving as a positive role model for children every day.

The event left a lasting impact on students and families alike, reinforcing the importance of community connections and the everyday heroes who help protect and support others.
