Sachem North's Math Honor Society Visits the National Museum of Mathematics

Sachem North’s National Math Honor Society, a chapter of Mu Alpha Theta, organized a field trip to the National Museum of Mathematics in New York City. It is one of the only museums dedicated solely to mathematics in the country.
Their mission is to “make mathematics accessible, fun, and meaningful, fostering a vibrant community where all can discover the wonders and power of mathematical thinking.”
During this trip, students had the opportunity to take a cryptography class. They learned about public-key encryption, which is how information, such as messages, is kept safe when sent over the internet. After the class, students were given the chance to peruse the museum. They explored a wide range of mathematical concepts throughout the fun, highly interactive exhibits.
Mu Alpha Theta is the National High School and Two-Year College Mathematics Honor Society. Their mission is to promote scholarship in, and enjoyment and understanding of, mathematics among high school and two-year college students. Sachem North’s chapter is one of 115 active chapters in all of New York State.
Each year, students with high achievement in mathematics are inducted into the honor society. Members have opportunities to compete in math competitions, participate in peer tutoring, earn scholarships, and give back to the community.
