For years, Sachem High School East’s Student Government, led by advisors Mr. Gallo and Mr. Jannace, has remained committed to supporting the ALS Ride for Life and raising awareness in the fight against ALS.

Working alongside Mr. Parkinson and Mrs. Sorrentino at Sagamore Middle School, students have organized assemblies, community walks, dodgeball tournaments, basketball fundraisers, and awareness events that have generated thousands of dollars for the cause. Their dedication has helped establish Sachem as the largest single school donor to the ALS Ride for Life.

This year continued that proud tradition as Sachem East students completed their annual walk from Sachem East to Sagamore Middle School and then on to Chippewa Elementary School. Along the route, students were welcomed by cheering crowds, honking horns, chanting supporters, and members of the Sachem community rallying behind the important cause.

The effort holds deep meaning for the students and community. East Student Government first formed a close relationship with ALS Ride for Life Founder Chris Pendergast and has continued to work alongside his wife, Christine Pendergast, and various PALS as they continue carrying the mission forward in pursuit of a cure.

This year’s walk was led by Sachem resident and PAL Missy Southard, accompanied by her husband, Rob, and their children, Drew and Hailey, who are current Sachem students. Their presence inspired students throughout the journey and reinforced the importance of compassion, perseverance, and community support.

The fundraising totals once again showcased the generosity and dedication of the Sachem community. Sachem East raised $10,911, Sagamore Middle School raised $3,434, and Chippewa Elementary School contributed an additional $815. Together, the three schools donated $15,160 to the ALS Ride for Life.

Through the continued efforts of Student Government, honor societies, faculty advisors, students, families, and supporters across the district, Sachem continues to make a meaningful impact in the fight against ALS while teaching students the importance of service, empathy, and giving back.
