Sachem East Drama Students Learn from Broadway’s Billy Lewis Jr.
Sachem High School East’s drama students received a powerful, firsthand look at the world of professional performance this week when Broadway and television performer Billy Lewis Jr. visited campus for an immersive masterclass.
Lewis, known for his appearances on Glee and starring roles in major stage productions including Jesus Christ Superstar, Hair, and Rock of Ages, spent time working directly with students on performance technique, character development, audition preparation, and the mindset required to succeed in the competitive entertainment industry. The session went far beyond a traditional Q&A.
Students participated in live scene work and vocal exercises, receiving immediate feedback from Lewis on stage presence, emotional authenticity, and audience connection. He emphasized discipline, resilience, and preparation, traits that resonate strongly with young performers striving to elevate their craft.
Lewis also spoke candidly about his journey, from training and auditions to landing roles in major touring productions, offering insight into both the challenges and rewards of life in the performing arts. His message centered on passion, meeting preparation, and encouraging students to treat their high school productions with the same professionalism as a Broadway stage.
For the Sachem East drama program, the visit represents another example of real-world exposure enhancing classroom learning. Experiences like this bridge the gap between education and industry, giving students tangible insight into career pathways in theater and entertainment.
