Sachem High School East senior Ibrahim Suleman has been named a Scholar in the coveted 2025 Regeneron Science Talent Search.
Ibrahim was honored for his project, “Biophotovoltaic System Utilizing Sphagnum Moss and Citrobacter freundii,” and was one of the top 300 students nationwide to receive this honor by the Society for Science, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit. It was reported that this year’s contest drew a record number of submissions, with close to 2,500 entrants from 796 high schools. For the contest, each student submitted independent, original research that was judged by leading experts in their respective fields.
As a Scholar, Ibrahim will receive $2,000, with a matching donation being made to the school, and will now have the chance to advance in the contest. The names of this year’s finalists will be announced later this month, each of whom will compete in March for additional scholarships – the top of which is $250,000.
