First, the Sachem PTA Council Reflections chairs introduced several of the Reflections Program winners. Reflections is a national program for students to explore their thoughts, feelings and ideas through the arts. This year, Sachem had a record-breaking 138 participants who demonstrated their interpretation of the theme, “I am hopeful because…,” through dance, film, music, literature, photography and the visual arts. Thirty-three Sachem students won at the Suffolk regional level, 11 went on to win at the New York State level and for the first time in Sachem history, three students were named national winners.

Following the Reflections honorees, several art students were introduced for recent awards. High School students Anna D’Arcangelis, Lena Gonnotta and Robert Pizzingrillo were honored for their work in the Bay Area Friends of the Fine Arts Juried Invitational High School Exhibition. Next, Merrimac fifth grader Michaela Jane Laigno was recognized for winning the Suffolk County 8th legislative district bicycle safety poster contest. Lastly, Emilia Daly was honored for illustrating a series of children’s books.
