Sachem High School North’s Interact Club took to the beach at Lake Ronkonkoma to participate in the International Coastal Cleanup. The cleanup is a global event with a mission to clean up rivers, lakes and beaches while documenting the trash collected to better understand what is polluting our waterways.

Students worked in teams and spent hours cleaning and recording trash along Lake Ronkonkoma’s shore. They picked up 1,450 pieces of glass, 347 cigarettes, 226 food wrappers, 159 bottle caps, 144 items of metal waste, 145 plastic or foam pieces, 76 cans, 88 bottle caps, 56 bottles, fishing lines, grocery bags, balloons, cups, plates and several other miscellaneous items. This is the 13th consecutive year the Interact Club has participated in the International Coastal Cleanup.
