Students in Mr. Jannace’s AP Human Geography classes recently took their learning beyond the classroom with a field study at Smith Haven Mall. This hands-on experience allowed them to analyze the cultural landscape and apply key geographic concepts in a real-world setting.

Jillian Friello, director of marketing and business development at the mall and a former student of Mr. Jannace, guided the students through the process. They examined the dispersion, density and patterns of stores, people and facilities, enhancing their understanding of place, region, culture and economic geography. Through detailed observations, students practiced critical thinking by analyzing why certain features are located where they are.

The experience was further reinforced in Mrs. Melandro’s Humanities Research co-requisite course, which supports students in refining their writing skills and mastering essential AP concepts. As they prepare for the AP Exam in May, this field study provided valuable insight into spatial analysis while giving students a new perspective on a familiar location.
